Postgame Report: David Spinks on Mentoring, 10/6

The energetic and enthralling David Spinks Skyped in all the way from New York City to share with us about something he knows a lot about – mentoring. Here’s a recap:

What went down

Characteristics of a good mentee, according to David, are to…

  • be open to help the mentor as needed (like fostering a reverse mentorship_
  • treat your mentor with respect as a mentor, not as a consultant
  • respect the mentor’s time

David also suggested some good Twitter chats to engage in, both to develop professionally and meet potential mentors. He suggested #journchat, #prstudchat and #u30pro, among others. If you’re interested in finding a Twitter chat that you’re interested in, there is a public Google Doc which lists a ton of Twitter chats, what they chat about and when they chat.

For the second speaker/panel event in a row, Lauren Fernandez, Arik Hanson and Amber Naslund were mentioned. Making their first appearance, through the spoken word, were David Mullen and Todd Defren, so be sure to check them out.

Overheard

“It’s their name on the line to support you…” – Spinks on one of the ways a mentor is investing in a mentee

“When you’re trying to find someone to be a mentor, make sure it’s someone you really look up to,… someone you respect.” – Spinks on deciding who you would like to ask to be a mentor.

“Do what makes you happy… If you lose all your money when you’re 40, then your wife leaves you. If you lose it now, then you just move back in with your parents.” – Spinks on life.

Updates and Reminders

A Prodigious Postlude – 9.22.10 Recap

“A lot of my job… is telling someone their baby is ugly, in the nicest way possible.”

- Brian Schwartz on dealing with clients.

“Describe to me your online and offline networks and how you use them.”

- Justin Goldsborough, citing an interview question he asks, stressing the importance of networking and effectively leveraging your network.

“Always be passionate and curious… Always listen to and learn from others… Always look at how valuable you’re being.”

- Sara Broderick‘s prophetic advice for life.

That’s just skimming the fantastic advice, insight and knowledge our prodigious panel of professionals shared with us last Wednesday. (Don’t forget to reach out to thank and *nudge* network with our guests.)

In case you missed some of the awesome people, blogs, resources and posts our panelists talked about, here’s a list I was able to piece together (if I missed something, link to it in the comments section!) -

  • Arik Hanson and his blog were mentioned numerous times. Although he is heralded for his PR chops, I’ve found him to be insightful, knowledgable and helpful no matter what career path you’re on. Definitely take the time to check him out and connect with him.
  • Amber Naslund was praised by our panelists, and for good reason. Not only is Amber’s blog fantastic, I had the opportunity to see her keynote at Social Fresh STL last spring where she blew the audience away. Her post on goals, strategies, objectives and tactics was cited as “bulletin board material” by our panelists – guess what I did when I got home?
  • Our panelists also talked about Lauren Fernandez, David Spinks, and their beautiful baby, the #U30Pro (Under 30 Professional) chat. (I can’t forget to give a special shout-out to Scott Hale, a genius of a man who joined the #U30Pro team.)
  • Other names that might sound familiar are Jason Falls, Jay Baer, Jason Kintzler (former broadcast journalist who came over to “the dark side,” as broadcast professors call it, of PR), and… put names and links I forgot in the comments!

Updates and Reminders!

Dues are due by Monday, October 11! Make checks payable to “AAF Mizzou” AND put your pawprint on the ‘memo’ line. You can hand in checks at a meeting or to Kathy Sharp in the Strategic Communication offices at 140 Walter Williams Hall.

If you are interested in participating in NSAC (National Student Advertising Competition) and haven’t already signed up with Morgan, shoot her an e-mail at mcmntc@mail.missouri.edu and join us in 276 Gannett Hall at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, 9/29 for a client briefing, team announcements and more!

Our next major event is Wednesday, 10/6 in Fisher Auditorium. The B.o.B concert isn’t until 8:30 pm, so get that excuse outta here. Details coming later this week.

Committees and mentorships are on the way! We have the committee lists done, so if you said you were interested on the survey, look for an e-mail this week. We are still working on putting the best mentor-mentee relationships together, but keep an eye out for more information on that next week.

(update) Pizza with the Professors will be on October 14 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Mark your calendars for this awesome social event and watch for more information soon!

Per the usual policy, always feel free to reach out to me or any executive board member of your choosing. We tend to think we’re a pretty cool group and you’re more than welcome to ask or tell us whatever you please.

Signing off in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month,

- El Presidente
